ICD-Code I86.88: Varicose veins of other specified sites
You have varicose veins.
The veins carry blood from the body towards the heart. Widened veins are also called varicose veins. Widened veins can form if, for example, the blood is unable to drain out of the vein properly. Blood then backs up in the veins.
The veins have small venous valves. The venous valves prevent the blood from flowing in the wrong direction. In some people, these valves are not strong enough, or they do not develop properly. Blood may similarly back up in the veins if the venous valves do not work properly. A weakness in the vascular walls or blood clots in the veins are other possible causes of varicose veins. Varicose veins at certain sites of the body may also be congenital.
