ICD-Code Q27.0: Congenital absence and hypoplasia of umbilical artery

One of the two arteries in the umbilical cord did not develop properly.

During pregnancy the umbilical cord connects the child's blood circulation to the mother's. The child receives nutrients and oxygen via the blood vessels in the umbilical cord. There are normally 3 blood vessels in the umbilical cord. One of these blood vessels carries oxygen-rich blood from the placenta to the baby. The other two blood vessels carry oxygen-poor blood from the baby to the placenta. The two blood vessels carrying the oxygen-poor blood are called arteries.

The placenta forms in the mother’s womb during pregnancy. The placenta consists of cells from the mother and cells from the unborn child.

If one of the two arteries has not developed properly, it may be absent or narrower than normal.
