ICD-Code Q43.0: Meckel diverticulum

You have a Meckel diverticulum in the region of your small intestine.

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. The small intestine connects to the stomach. The nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the food in the small intestine.

A Meckel diverticulum (or Meckel's diverticulum) is a pouch in the wall of the small intestine. This pouch is a congenital malformation. The small intestine develops before birth and this process involves the temporary development of a connecting duct in this location. If this duct fails to fully disappear, an outpouching of the small intestine remains.

The pouch itself causes no symptoms. However, the bulge may become inflamed or bleed. The intestine may also become blocked by the pouch. In this case, symptoms may occur.
