ICD-Code T56.1: Toxic effect: Mercury and its compounds

You have had harmful exposure to mercury or its compounds.

Mercury is a heavy metal. Mercury is used, for example, in thermometers and dental amalgam fillings.

A metal or metal compound can harm the body in various ways. The symptoms often depend on which type of contact the person has had with the metal. For example, skin contact with metal could cause skin damage. Poisoning can occur if a person ingests metal with food or inhales metal vapors.

Exposure to mercury can damage mucous membranes and cause bloody diarrhea. The kidneys can also be damaged. Mercury may also cause gum discoloration. Long-term exposure to mercury can cause irritability, difficulty concentrating and other types of nerve damage.
