ICD-Code T56.4: Toxic effect: Copper and its compounds
You have had harmful exposure to copper or its compounds.
Copper is a heavy metal. Copper can be used, for example, in kitchenware and can be found in drinking water from copper pipes. It is also used in industrial applications.
A metal or metal compound can harm the body in various ways. The symptoms often depend on which type of contact the person has had with the metal. For example, skin contact with metal could cause skin damage. Poisoning can occur if a person ingests metal with food or inhales metal vapors.
Copper can cause chemical burns. It can also cause gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Other possible symptoms include headache, fatigue and mood swings. In addition, long-term exposure can cause the gums, teeth and hair to become discolored.
