ICD-Code T56.7: Toxic effect: Beryllium and its compounds

You have had harmful exposure to beryllium or its compounds.

Beryllium is a light metal. Beryllium occurs in some alloys used, for example, in electronic components or in the aviation industry.

A metal or metal compound can harm the body in various ways. The symptoms often depend on which type of contact the person has had with the metal. For example, skin contact with metal could cause skin damage. Poisoning can occur if a person ingests metal with food or inhales metal vapors.

Beryllium splinters in the skin can cause nodules to develop. If beryllium is inhaled, it can cause lung inflammation or other respiratory diseases. Long-term inhalation of beryllium can result in lung cancer.
