The skull is made up of various bones. One of these bones is the petrous bone (petrosal). The petrous bone is located on the right and left sides of the skull. The petrous bone houses the inner ear, for example. The mastoid process, the bony projection behind the ear, is part of the petrous bone.
The facial nerve runs from both sides of the brain to different parts of the head. The nerve does different things. For example, it controls a lot of facial muscles. The nerve is also important for our sense of taste. It also affects our hearing and how much saliva and tears are formed.The facial nerve is located inside a canal in the skull bone. This canal runs through the petrous bone.
You had your petrous bone partially removed. With certain diseases, the facial nerve must also be removed. The middle ear and the mastoid process (the bony projection behind the ear) are normally also removed together with the petrous bone. The auditory canal may also be sealed. Removal of the petrous bone creates a cavity. This cavity can be filled with muscle tissue or fatty tissue.
