The ear is a sensory organ that is used to hear and to maintain one’s balance. There are 3 different areas in the ear: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.The inner ear contains the organs of hearing and balance.The inner ear is filled with fluid.
There is a small bony projection on the head behind the ear. It contains small cavities full of air. You can feel this bony projection behind the ear.In order to reach the inner ear during surgery, the bony projection behind your ear was hollowed out or partially removed.
Your inner ear was then opened with a small incision to allow fluid to drain out. The opening created can then be used to insert a small plastic part or a tiny tube. This keeps the pathway open so that the fluid from the inner ear can drain out over an extended period.
