OPS-Code 5-221.1:
Operations on the paranasal sinuses: Operations on the maxillary sinus: Fenestration via middle nasal passage
Your maxillary sinus was surgically opened.
The paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull. They are each connected to the nasal cavity via an opening that forms the inside of the nose. The paranasal sinuses are lined internally with mucous membrane. There are four different paranasal sinuses. The maxillary sinus is in the upper jawbone.
The surgery involved removing bones between your maxillary sinus and your nasal cavity. The opening can be used, for example, to remove pathologically altered mucous membrane from the maxillary sinus. The opening also improves the drainage of secretions from the maxillary sinus.
