The body has a number of cavities that contain various organs. For example, the chest cavity contains the lungs and heart, while the abdominal cavity contains the abdominal organs.

The cells of the body have typical proteins on their surfaces that differ depending on the type, role and origin of the cell. Various chemical messengers produced by the body can bind to some of these proteins. These proteins are also known as receptors. Many bodily functions are controlled by chemical messengers and the corresponding receptors. Pathologically altered cells sometimes have a very large number of receptors on their surface for a certain chemical messenger.

The radioactive drug detects a receptor on the surface of cells and binds to it. The drug emits radiation at this site. The intention is for the radiation to damage pathologically altered cells in the body.
