A25.1: Streptobacillosis

You have been infected by rat-bite fever.

Rat-bite fever is caused by certain bacteria. These bacteria occur mainly in Europe and North America. There, the bacteria occur in rats and other rodents. You can become infected by having contact with infected animals. You can also become infected via impure food or water.

Rat-bite fever can cause a high temperature. The fever can also keep recurring over a long time. The joints may also be painful. And you may feel nauseous and have to vomit. You can also get a rash and your lymph nodes can be enlarged.

The lymph nodes are small bean-shaped objects. They are found throughout the body. Lymph nodes filter the tissue fluid. They are part of the defense system.
