B77.8: Ascariasis with other complications

You have been infected by roundworm.

Roundworms are parasites that can infect people and pigs. Parasites are small creatures that, at least for periods of time, live off other creatures. In humans they can cause illnesses. After an infection, roundworm eggs are secreted with excrement. The eggs occur in contaminated soil, for example. You can become infected if contaminated soil gets into your mouth. Contaminated soil can occur in unwashed food, for example.

The worms can cause symptoms in both the lungs and the intestine. For example, you can get a cough and fever.

Roundworms can cause stomach pain and nausea. A severe infection can even cause a blockage of the intestine. You may lose your appetite. When children have a long-term roundworm infection, it can even hinder their growth.
