D65.1: Diffuse or disseminated intravascular coagulation [DIC]

Your blood is not clotting properly.

If the blood vessel is injured, the blood clots at this site. This prevents too much blood from being lost. The platelets and many proteins in the blood have to work together for blood to clot.

In your case, many blood clots have formed in the small blood vessels. The blood clots clog the blood vessels and may thereby damage organs. If a lot of blood clots form, a lot of proteins for the clotting are used up, too. If there are only a few proteins in the blood for the clotting, you may also start to bleed faster. You may also bleed more severely than normal. You will usually be seriously ill. There are various reasons why many blood clots may form in the small blood vessels. For example, that may occur due to another disease or an operation.
