G90.00: Carotid sinus syncope
You have had circulatory problems. The circulatory problems are caused by pressure on over-sensitive nerve cells in your carotid artery.
On both sides of the neck there is an artery running up towards the head. This carotid artery divides into two other arteries. Where the carotid artery divides, there are some special nerve cells. Amongst other things, these nerve cells measure the blood pressure. The nerve cells can then influence the blood pressure and the heart rate.
In your case, these nerve cells are responding over-sensitively to external pressure. This pressure on the nerve cells may occur, for example, when one turns one’s head or inclines it backwards. Other tissue can press on these nerve cells, too.
The pressure on the nerve cells can cause the blood pressure to temporarily fall. Moreover, the heart may beat more slowly or stop beating entirely. When the heart beats, it pumps blood to the entire body. If the blood pressure is low or the heart is beating too slowly, the brain may not get enough oxygen-rich blood. This can then cause dizziness or loss of consciousness.
Additional indicator
On medical documents, the ICD code is often appended by letters that indicate the diagnostic certainty or the affected side of the body.
- G: Confirmed diagnosis
- V: Tentative diagnosis
- Z: Condition after
- A: Excluded diagnosis
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
