G96.0: Cerebrospinal fluid leak
Damage to your brain linings has caused cerebrospinal fluid to leak out.
The brain and the spinal cord are surrounded by 3 meninges (linings). The outer meninx is the dura mater. A soft meninx is in direct contact with the dura mater on the inside of it. There is an additional soft meninx on the brain and spinal cord. The space between these two soft meninges is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain and the spinal cord against impact. The cerebrospinal fluid also nourishes the meninges.
Cerebrospinal fluid can leak out when the brain’s linings are damaged. Cerebrospinal fluid may leak out of the nose or ears. This may cause the pressure in the brain to drop and result in symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.
The brain’s linings may get damaged for no reason at all. However, they may also be damaged by an injury or illness.
There can be many reasons for the brain’s linings to become disordered. There may be an inflammation. The brain’s linings may have grown incorrectly, or diseased tissue may have grown on them.
