H02.2: Lagophthalmos

You are unable to close your eye properly.

The eyelids along with the lashes are located above and under the eye. They protect the eye from injuries and drying out. Fat, muscles, and several glands are included in the eyelid, among other things. The glands produce some partly fatty elements for the layer of fluid on the eye.

There are various reasons why someone cannot close their eye properly. It can happen if an eyelid bends outwards, for example. It may also be because the eyelid has shortened due to an injury or scarring. It is also impossible to close one's eye properly if the muscle that closes the eye is paralyzed. It may also be that the eye is protruding more from the eye socket due to some disorder.

If the eye is unable to close fully, the surface of the eye is not properly protected. As a result, it can get damaged more easily. The affected eye may feel dry.
