H15.1: Episcleritis

The connective tissue around your sclera is inflamed.

The sclera is a white, tough sheath around the eyeball. The sclera maintains the shape of the eyeball and stabilizes the eye.

The sclera is surrounded by connective tissue. Connective tissue contains lots of fine fibers. Running between these fibers around the sclera are blood vessels, for example.

Inflammation of the connective tissue around the sclera often causes part of the eye to become red. The eye may also be sore.
