I05.8: Other mitral valve diseases
Your mitral valve is not working properly.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition.
There are 4 valves in the heart. These valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction. So they have to close tightly. They also have to open up fully so that the blood can be properly pumped out of the heart. The mitral valve is the valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
The mitral valve can be damaged by, among other things, certain antibodies attacking the heart valve. These antibodies are actually aimed at bacteria, but under certain circumstances they can also attack tissue in the body. The mitral valve may therefore be damaged following a throat infection caused by bacteria. Any symptoms may not become apparent until many years after the throat infection.
If the mitral valve is not working properly, this can affect cardiac work. The heart may then have to work harder to pump enough blood into the body. You may have various symptoms as a result. You may be short of breath or have a racing heart. You may also feel weak or tired. If the heart can no longer pump enough blood, this can cause back-up. This then leads to fluid building up in the legs.
Additional indicator
On medical documents, the ICD code is often appended by letters that indicate the diagnostic certainty or the affected side of the body.
- G: Confirmed diagnosis
- V: Tentative diagnosis
- Z: Condition after
- A: Excluded diagnosis
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
