I09.1: Rheumatic diseases of endocardium, valve unspecified

An immune system response has caused damage to the inner membrane lining your heart.

At some point in the past, you had an infection caused by certain bacteria. These bacteria typically cause throat inflammation or tonsil inflammation. One way the immune system fights bacteria is with antibodies. Certain antibodies can also damage the body’s own tissue. Different symptoms are caused by damage to different types if tissue. The antibodies have damaged your heart over an extended period of time.

The infection has caused damage to the inner membrane of your heart. The heart is composed of a thick layer of muscle and a thin membrane inside the heart. An external sac, the pericardium, surrounds the heart. This sac consists of a protective membrane. When the inner membrane of the heart becomes inflamed, the heart valves may be affected. There are 4 valves in the heart. These valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction. So they have to close tightly. They also have to open up fully so that the blood can be properly pumped out of the heart. In certain cases, an inflamed heart valve may stop working as it should. The valve may then no longer close properly. As a result, the heart is no longer able to pump the blood through the body so well.

Additional indicator

On medical documents, the ICD code is often appended by letters that indicate the diagnostic certainty or the affected side of the body.

  • G: Confirmed diagnosis
  • V: Tentative diagnosis
  • Z: Condition after
  • A: Excluded diagnosis
  • L: Left
  • R: Right
  • B: Both sides
