K13.5: Oral submucous fibrosis

The mucous membrane in your mouth has changed.

The mucous membrane is a moist skin. The whole of the oral cavity is lined with mucous membrane.

Changes may occur if the mucous membrane has been irritated by certain foods for a long time, for example. But it is also possible that no cause can be found for the changes.

Whitish patches or stripes are visible on the changed mucous membrane, for example. You may also have a burning sensation or pain in your oral cavity. Your sense of taste may also deteriorate. Over time the mucous membrane may also harden. The hardened mucous membrane may prevent you from opening your mouth properly.
