K91.80: Generalized mucositis in immunocompromised patients

The mucous membranes of your digestive tract have become inflamed.

The digestive tract begins in the mouth and ends at the anus. The digestive tract includes the gullet, the stomach, and the intestines, for example. All these organs have a mucous membrane on the inside. The mucous membrane protects the organ. Sometimes substances for digestion are also formed in the mucous membrane, for instance in the stomach.

Your immune system is weakened. As a result, the body may not fight against pathogens so well. That encourages inflammations. In your case, the mucous membranes of the digestive tract have become inflamed. You may then have pain in your mouth or abdomen. Sometimes you will also have flatulence or diarrhea, for example.

The immune system can be weakened by such things as certain drugs and irradiation treatments. These treatments are for instance intended to fight another disease. The drugs and irradiation treatments usually also attack body cells that divide quickly. Among other things, these include the cells of the mucous membranes in the digestive tract.
