M46.03: Spinal enthesopathy Cervicothoracic region

Tendons or ligaments at the junction between your cervical spine and your thoracic spine are pathologically changed.

The spine consists of several sections. The cervical spine begins below the head. The cervical spine is very mobile. Below that is the thoracic spine. The ribs are attached to the thoracic spine. Below the thoracic spine is the lumbar spine. The lumbar spine is also very mobile and it bears a large part of the body’s weight. After the lumbar spine, the sacrum and coccyx join.

Tendons are the connections between muscles and bones. There are many different muscles in the spine. The muscles give the spine its mobility. Muscles that move the arms and legs also start at the spine. In the spine there are also many ligaments that stabilize the spine. Both the tendons and the ligaments are made up of tough connective tissue and they attach firmly to the bone. The areas of your tendons or ligaments that are attached to the bone are pathologically changed.

These types of pathological changes in tendons or ligaments may be caused by inflammations. The inflammations can be caused by heavy strain or by incorrect weight-bearing. The pathological changes can cause pain. The pain may also make the spine less stable than usual.
