N64.0: Fissure and fistula of nipple

You have an extra duct connecting your mammary gland and your nipple. Or the skin around your nipple is ruptured.

The breast is made up of fatty tissue, connective tissue and the mammary gland. Milk is produced in the mammary gland during and after pregnancy so that the child can be fed. Breast milk is expressed through the nipple.

The breast consists of a large number of individual glands. The glands open into small ducts that then all converge at the nipple. For a number of different reasons, an extra duct can form between the glands and the nipple or skin. The skin at the nipple can also become ruptured due to an inflammation or injury. The nipple may become painful. There may also be bleeding, weeping or itching around the nipple.
