O12.2: Gestational oedema with proteinuria
You have an increased amount of fluid that has built up in your body during your pregnancy. You are also excreting too much protein in your urine.
The body changes in pregnancy. Among other things, the body excretes less salt and less fluid in pregnancy. As a result, an increased amount of fluid may build up in the tissue. This can cause the legs, hands or face, for example, to swell up.
The kidneys filter blood and create urine. Normally very little protein gets into the urine via the kidneys. During pregnancy, the kidneys work harder and are also slightly more permeable to proteins. This means that more protein is passed from the blood into the urine. However, in your case, you have too much protein in your urine. If too much protein is excreted, more fluid can get stored in the tissue.
