O91.01: Infection of nipple associated with childbirth With mention of difficulties latching on
Your nipple has become inflamed.
The breast is made up of fatty tissue, connective tissue and the mammary gland. Milk is produced in the mammary gland during and after pregnancy so that the child can be fed.
The nipple can become inflamed if pathogens get into it. The pathogens can get in through very tiny wounds that occur while breastfeeding or using a breast pump.
An inflamed nipple can be painful. It can be especially painful when the child starts sucking on the nipple at the beginning of the breast-feeding session. The nipple may also become red, swollen or warmer than usual.
The inflammation of your nipple can make it difficult to breast-feed your child.
