Q13.0: Coloboma of iris

Your iris is changed due to a defect.

The colored iris is located in the center of the eye. There is a black opening in the center of the iris. This is the pupil. The iris also controls how big the pupil is.

While developing in the womb, many different types of tissue develop in the body. The organs and body parts develop out of the various types of tissue. If tissue fails to develop properly, defects can occur.

In one place, the tissue for your iris did not grow together during development. At that location, therefore, a fissure remained. The fissure is then typically in the lower part of the iris, lying towards the nose. This fissure can be hereditary. Other family members can also be affected by a hereditary disorder.

When there is a fissure in the iris, light can fall into the eye unhindered as a result. This can make you feel dazzled, particularly in bright light.
