Q61.1: Polycystic kidney, autosomal recessive
You have a congenital malformation where you have lots of cysts containing fluid in the kidneys.
There are normally 2 kidneys in the body. They filter blood and create urine. They thus help to detoxify the body. Furthermore, the kidneys regulate the blood pressure and salt content in the blood, among other things.
If you have cavities/holes in the kidneys, your kidneys may be larger than normal. The cavities may displace normal renal tissue. It is possible for the kidneys to stop working properly as a result.
You can have high blood pressure. The condition can often also damage other organs such as the liver or the lungs. It can cause serious illness shortly after birth.
The disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.
On medical documents, the ICD code is often appended by letters that indicate the diagnostic certainty or the affected side of the body.
- G: Confirmed diagnosis
- V: Tentative diagnosis
- Z: Condition after
- A: Excluded diagnosis
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
