Q63.1: Lobulated, fused and horseshoe kidney
Your kidney is formed differently than normal. This condition is congenital, which means you were born with it.
There are normally 2 kidneys in the body. There is one on each side of the spine just below the ribcage. The kidneys filter blood and create urine. They thus help to detoxify the body. Furthermore, the kidneys regulate the blood pressure and salt content in the blood, among other things.
A kidney is normally shaped a bit like a bean. The outside of a kidney curves outwards. The inside of a kidney curves inwards. Blood vessels and the ureter run on the inside. Urine normally drains from the kidneys into the urinary bladder via the ureters.
