Z45.81: Adjustment and management of diaphragm pacemaker

The settings of a device you are using have been checked or adjusted. This device stimulates your diaphragm.

The diaphragm is a large breathing muscle. The diaphragm tenses when we breathe in. This lowers the diaphragm. This allows the lungs to expand and take in more air. When we breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes, rising up as it does so. The movements of the diaphragm are controlled by nerves.

With some diseases, the nerves that control the diaphragm no longer work properly. In that case, you will not be able to breathe properly. Sometimes a diaphragmatic pacemaker is then inserted in the body. This device stimulates the nerves of the diaphragm.

Such a device can be used to adjust how often and how heavily you breathe.
