ICD-Code T56.0: Toxic effect: Lead and its compounds
You have had harmful exposure to lead or its compounds.
Lead is a heavy metal. Lead is used, for example, in batteries, lead-based paints and varnishes and some traditional remedies. Lead may also be present in drinking water from old water pipes.
A metal or metal compound can harm the body in various ways. The symptoms often depend on which type of contact the person has had with the metal. For example, skin contact with metal could cause skin damage. Poisoning can occur if a person ingests metal with food or inhales metal vapors.
If lead enters the body, it can cause various symptoms. The type of symptoms experienced depends, for example, on how much lead has been ingested. Possible symptoms include headache, fatigue and mood changes. Intestinal cramping and diarrhea may also occur. Lead also disrupts production of the red pigment in blood. This can cause anaemia. In addition, the skin and gums may become discolored. Paralysis or liver damage are also possible.
