Eine Sterilisation hat zum Ziel, dass die behandelte Person dauerhaft unfruchtbar ist. Bei Frauen werden dazu die Eileiter verschlossen oder durchtrennt. Bei Männern werden die Samenleiter durchtrennt, sodass keine Spermien mehr hindurch gelangen können.
Die beiden Eileiter führen jeweils links und rechts von den Eierstöcken in Richtung Gebärmutter. Sie sind wie Schläuche und befördern die Eizellen von den Eierstöcken in die Gebärmutter. Der Samenleiter befördert die Spermien aus dem Hoden in die Harnröhre. Über die Harnröhre gelangen die Spermien nach außen. Es gibt auf jeder Seite einen Samenleiter.
