Physiological function tests: Sleep study
Your sleeping behavior has been examined over a period of hours.
Sleep involves a certain sequence and it is governed by various factors. There are deep sleep phases and lighter sleep phases. These phases alternate during sleep.
Equipment is used to take various measurements during the test. The heartbeat and the movements of your body are measured, for example. Various measuring devices are also used to monitor your breathing. Any snoring sounds are also recorded.
These tests often measure brainwaves and eye movements, too. Brainwaves are electrical signals in the brain. These electrical signals send information in the brain. Eye movements also generate certain electrical signals. To measure these electrical signals a lot of small sensors are attached to the person’s head. The brainwaves and eye movements that are measured can then indicate the different sleep phases.
A video recording was made of you while you were sleeping. In this way, when there are certain changes to the measurement readings, for example, we can see how you were lying or whether you were moving at that particular moment.
