Operations on cardiac valves and septa and vessels near the heart: Creation and enlargement of a septal defect in the heart: Creation of a septal defect (Blalock-Hanlon)
Your cardiac septum has been artificially opened up in one place.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition.
Your heart did not develop properly before you were born. As a result, your heart is not able to pump the blood to your lungs and body properly. So your body does not get enough oxygen-rich blood. Via the artificial opening in your septum, the blood can flow through other passages. In this way, more oxygen should get to your body.
When an operation is being done on the cardiac septum, a heart-lung machine may be used. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
