Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Excision and destruction of diseased tissue in the pericardium and pericardiectomy: Pericardiectomy, partial (pericardial window), thoracoscopic

You have had a part of your pericardium removed.

The pericardium is a layer of connective tissue surrounding the heart. There is some fluid in the pericardium (heart sac). So the heart is able to move inside this lining.

You have had a thoracoscopy involving an operation on your pericardium. A bronchoscopy first involves making a small incision in the skin. A tube with a camera is pushed through this incision. This camera sends pictures of the inside of the body to a screen. Instruments such as forceps and scissors can be inserted through other small incisions in the chest.

The aim of the surgery was to enable fluid to drain from your pericardium. The aim of this treatment was to relieve the pressure on your heart.
