Rhythm surgery and other operations on heart and pericardium: Heart and heart-lung transplantation: Heart-lung retransplant (en bloc) during the same hospitalization

You have been given a donor heart and donor lungs once more.

At the start of the operation, your chest was opened up so that your heart could be operated on directly.

The operation involved, firstly, removing your own heart and your own lungs, then inserting the donor heart and donor lungs. The donor heart is usually connected to the various blood vessels that run into, or come out of, the heart. Sometimes part of the person’s own heart is retained in the chest, and then connected to the donor heart. The donor lungs are also connected to the trachea.

You have had this type of heart-lung transplant again. This may be necessary if a donor heart or donor lungs fail to work properly, for example.

A heart-lung machine is usually used during an operation like this. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
