Blood cell transfusion: Autologous transfusion (collection and reinfusion of the patient’s own blood): Intraoperative normovolemic hemodilution

You had blood taken from you immediately before an operation. You were given this blood back during or after the operation.

Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The liquid part of the blood is also called blood plasma. Blood plasma is made up of water, among other things. Blood plasma carries nutrients and endogenous substances, such as messenger substances. The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets. The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. They fight pathogens. Platelets are important for blood clotting.

Blood or blood components are usually administered via a blood vessel, for example in the elbow.
