Therapeutic intravascular catheterization and cannulation: Inserting and changing a catheter in peripheral and central venous vessels: Inserting: Large-lumen catheter for extracorporeal blood circulation in a central venous vessel

You have had a tube inserted into a vein.

Veins are blood vessels that transport the blood back to the heart. Sometimes treatment requires tubes to be inserted into veins. Tubes like these are inserted into veins in the neck, collarbone or groin, for example.

The tip of the tube is pushed close to the heart. The other end of the tube hangs a little way out of the body. This end can be used to, for example, take blood, inject medications or supply the body with fluids.

You had a particularly large tube inserted. Blood can flow out from the body into a device through a tube of this type. The device enriches, for example, the blood with oxygen. The blood is then put back into the body from the device.

Additional indicator

If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.

  • L: Left
  • R: Right
  • B: Both sides
