Therapeutic intravascular catheterization and cannulation: (Percutaneous) transluminal angioplasty: Selective embolization with bare metal coils: Portal vein

Small metal coils have been used to close your portal vein.

The portal vein transports nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal area to the liver. The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver.

A catheter was used in the treatment. A catheter is a thin tube. This tube is inserted into a blood vessel in the groin or arm, and pushed further in. Various instruments can be pushed at the front of the tube. X-ray images are taken during the treatment. These show clearly whether the tip of the tube is in the right place.
