Extracorporeal circulation and treatment of blood: Intraoperative circulation outside the body (using heart lung machine): At profound hypothermia (below 20°C): With intra-aortic balloon occlusion

You have had an operation involving the use of a heart-lung machine.

When a heart operation is being carried out, the heart is stopped for a while. During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the heart and lung functions. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body. The aorta, which emerges from the heart, is closed by a balloon during this process.

When the blood flows outside the body through the heart-lung machine, it can also be cooled. As a result, the body is cooled to below 20 degrees during the operation. The aim of this low temperature is to protect the cells in the body. When cells get too little oxygen they can become damaged. At low temperatures the cells in the body require less oxygen.

Additional indicator

If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.

  • L: Left
  • R: Right
  • B: Both sides
