A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.
The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. The small intestine connects to the stomach. The nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the food in the small intestine.
A Meckel diverticulum (or Meckel's diverticulum) is a pouch in the wall of the small intestine. The pouch is a congenital malformation. The small intestine develops before birth and this process involves the temporary development of a connecting duct in this location. If this duct fails to fully disappear, an outpouching of the small intestine remains.
