E26.1: Secondary hyperaldosteronism

Your adrenal glands are producing too much of a particular messenger substance (hormone).

The adrenal glands are at the top of the kidneys. Adrenal glands produce various messenger substances. One messenger substance is called aldosterone and controls the amount of sodium in the blood. Sodium helps regulate the moisture content in the body.

If there is not enough fluid in the blood, the adrenal glands produce more of the hormone aldosterone. That can also occur if there is actually enough fluid, but too little is reaching the kidneys. The kidneys measure how much fluid and salts are in the blood.

The sodium content in the blood is increased by the messenger substance aldosterone. If the sodium content in the blood increases, the amount of fluid in the blood also goes up. As a result, the heart has to pump more often and more vigorously. That can lead to high blood pressure.
