A32.1: Listerial meningitis and meningoencephalitis
You have been infected with listeria. As a result, your meninges have become inflamed.
You have become infected with certain bacteria. These bacteria are called listeria. Listeria occur for example in unwashed vegetables, raw milk or raw meat and fish. With a listeria infection, it is common to have no symptoms or only a few. But if the defense system is weak, it is possible to become seriously ill with listeria.
Your meninges have been inflamed by the bacteria.
On the outside of the brain and spinal cord there are three thin meninges (linings). A tough meninx, the dura mater, is on the outside. Below that are two soft meninges. The spinal cord is located in the spinal column. The spinal cord is made up of nerve fibers. The brain uses the nerve fibers to exchange information with the organs, skin and muscles.
When the meninges are inflamed, this can cause various symptoms. It is also possible to get a high fever and feel very sick. Severe headaches and a stiff neck are common. You may find it difficult to tolerate bright light and loud noises. Sometimes you may also feel nauseated and feel like you have to vomit. Seizures are possible or you may lose consciousness.
