B33.2: Viral carditis

Your heart is inflamed because you have been infected by viruses.

The viruses have inflamed certain parts of your heart. The heart is composed of a thick muscle layer and a thin membrane in the heart interior. An external sac, the pericardium, surrounds the heart. This sac consists of a tight membrane.

When the heart is inflamed there are sometimes only minor symptoms. But you may also have a high temperature and feel weak. Your heart may beat irregularly. This might make you feel dizzy. Sometimes the heart no longer works properly. You may have breathing problems or swollen legs as a result. When the heart is inflamed you can also become seriously ill.
