B83.0: Visceral larva migrans

You have been infected by roundworm.

Roundworms are parasites that infect dogs or cats, for example. Parasites are small creatures that, at least for periods of time, live off other creatures. In humans they can cause illnesses. The animals get infected when they eat their prey. Prey can include rabbits or fish. Humans can also become infected, for example if you do not cook rabbit or fish properly before eating it. You can also get infected if you swallow worm eggs from the soil.

Once swallowed, roundworms can get into the intestine via the stomach. From the intestine, they can infect internal organs. The skin can become red and swollen in places. You may also have fever or stomach pain. When the lungs are infected you may have a cough, for example. When the eye is infected you may have eye soreness or impaired vision. Roundworms can also infect the brain. You can then get headaches and a stiff neck. Potentially, you will no longer be able to move certain parts of your body properly.
