D18.18: Lymphangioma Other sites
Your lymph vessels have changed.
Fluid forms in tissue throughout the body every day. This tissue fluid is the lymph. The lymph is carried around the body by lymph vessels. The lymph vessels run around the entire body and are connected to blood vessels. At some points, there are lymph nodes along the lymph vessels. Pathogens are rendered harmless in the lymph nodes, for example.
Your lymph vessels have changed. For example, the lymph can accumulate in the lymphatic vessels. This can sometimes cause a large swelling. It is also possible that there is abnormal growth of lymph vessels. The disease is usually congenital, which means you were born with it.
The change is benign. Benign changes do not usually destroy the healthy tissue and do not spread throughout the body. However, if the swelling is very large, then the surrounding tissue can also be damaged.
