D76.4: Cytokine release syndrome

Some of your immune cells are producing too many messengers.

The body's immune system is made up of different types of immune cells. Some immune cells can destroy pathogens or foreign bodies themselves. Other immune cells produce certain antibodies.

When immune cells produce too many messengers, it can cause inflammation throughout the body. You can have a high temperature and a rash on your skin, for example. You may also feel tired and weak. You may also suffer from nausea and vomiting, headaches and muscular soreness. You may also be seriously ill. You may then have problems with your circulation and breathing.

The symptoms may appear as a side effect of cancer treatment, for example, or due to problems with the immune system.
