E78.80: Hyperlipoproteinemia (a)

You have too much of a specific fat transporter in your blood.

Fats have various jobs in the body. There are various kinds of fats. For example, fats are important for the structure of cells and for making the production of particular messenger substances possible. Fats are transported in the blood by fat transporters.

One important fat transporter in the blood is lipoprotein a. If there is too much lipoprotein a in the blood, fats are deposited in the body’s blood vessels and they constrict them. This can result in circulatory disorders. The amount of lipoprotein a in the blood is usually congenital. There can also be other, isolated causes of excess lipoprotein a in the blood. These causes include diabetes and disorders of the kidneys and the thyroid gland.
