E83.50: Calciphylaxis

You have stored too much calcium at some sites in your body. As a result, small blood vessels in your skin have calcified.

You can no longer utilize calcium and phosphate properly. Calcium and phosphate are for instance present in bones. In your case, calcium and phosphate have been deposited at other sites in your body. As a result, the small blood vessels in your skin especially are calcifying.

The skin is being supplied with less blood due to the calcification of the blood vessels. As a result, the skin may turn blue. Wounds and open sores may develop on the skin more easily. These wounds can be colonized by pathogens. It is also possible for certain parts of the skin to necrotize (die).

This disease often occurs when you have received a new kidney or when you are getting dialysis. But you can also get the disease when the kidneys are no longer working properly.
