E88.3: Tumour lysis syndrome
Your body is suddenly overstressed with harmful substances.
The tissue in the body is made up of cells. With cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, which leads to a malignant neoplasm (abnormal growth of tissue) developing. The cancer cells can destroy the healthy tissue and spread throughout the body.
If many cancer cells die off suddenly, their components then accumulate in the blood. This often happens after a cancer treatment. These released substances are harmful to the body in large amounts. A life-threatening overload of the body can then occur. The kidneys are the most severely stressed, because they have to break down and excrete most of these accumulating substances. Cardiac arrhythmias can also occur since the blood salts are thrown out of balance.
