During one’s childhood and adolescence, one learns to deal with difficult, strong emotions. If it becomes difficult to deal with emotions, the person may revert to unusual behavior. The person may suck their thumb, bite their nails, or pick their nose. They may also masturbate excessively. Behavior like this may serve to calm oneself down, for example.
